The man who berated and tossed dollar bills at a man with Parkinson's disease during a health care protest last week says he is remorseful and scared.

"I snapped. I absolutely snapped and I can't explain it any other way," said Chris Reichert of Victorian Village, in a Dispatch interview.

In his first comments on an incident that went viral across the Internet and was repeatedly played on cable television news shows, Reichert said he is sorry about his confrontation with Robert A. Letcher, 60, of the North Side. Letcher, a former nuclear engineer who suffers from Parkinson's, was verbally attacked as he sat before anti-health care demonstrators in front of Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy's district office last week.

"He's got every right to do what he did and some may say I did too, but what I did was shameful," Reichert said. "I haven't slept since that day."

"I made a donation (to a local Parkinson's disease group) and that starts the healing process."

Earlier this week, Reichert, 40, denied any involvement in a confrontation featured in a Dispatch video that drew an emotional response from viewers across the country.

White Powder Mailed to NY Congressman's Office in Wake of Healthcare Vote Determined to be "Not Hazardous"

KEW GARDENS (WABC) -- New York Police Department field tests have ruled a white powder sent with a threatening letter to the Queens office of Congressman Anthony Weiner is not hazardous.

Workers reported the discovery in the Kew Gardens Road office just before 1:50 p.m.

Nine people in the office were being checked out, although none were reported to be injured.

Police say the letter was handwritten in block letters and made a threat related to Weiner's vote on the sweeping federal health care legislation.

Workers were decontaminated as a precaution. More sophisticated lab testing would also be done to determine the substance.

It was the latest in a string of several threats made against Weiner and apparently linked to the health care vote... >more

Yesterday a bunch of Tea Party anti-healthcare protesters called black and gay lawmakers 'nigger' and 'faggot'. Today the right-wing blogs want an apology — from the lawmakers, to the protesters.

Glenn Reynolds, at Instapundit, targeted his ire at James Clyburn, the Congressman and veteran of the civil rights movement. (The capitals, inevitably, are his.) "DOES CLYBURN OWE TEA PARTY PROTESTERS AN APOLOGY? The bogus racism card has been played so often that I no longer find such charges very credible. I'm sure, however, that, true or not, they'll be played much more loudly than the indisputably true statements about the antiwar movement."

Conservative blogger Ann Althouse is more magnanimous and forgiving of the lawmakers. She doesn't want them to apologise. But she does feel that "it's outrageous for them to pose as victims without very good cause. So what if some idiot said a bad word...?" >more

In fact, if you were to ask many of us, you'll find that we're opposed to the current bill because it's another corporate giveaway, because of the threat of fines and imprisonment for not being able to afford health insurance, because of the sellout of womens' reproductive rights, because single-payer advocates were shut out of Obama's big "healthcare summit" in favor of corporations, and because the part of the bill even remotely resembling single-payer -- the picked-over old bone known as "public option" -- is likely to be eliminated as well in the Senate version.

Just so we're on the same page, here: community organizing group ACORN registered large numbers of black voters in Chicago for the last big "election". As is common in many registration campaigns, there's a fair number of wise-asses registering dead peoples' names, or fake names. Also, as is required by law by boards of elections in any US city I've been to, any bogus/invalid registrations are reported, to keep the voter rolls cleared of all the dead people, and all those Luke Skywalkers and Donald Ducks.

So, anyway, outfits like the Drudge Report (has anybody informed that bonehead that the '90s are over?) get hold of this and, in their own predictable, inimitable fashion, proceed to blow this up into some kind of bogus "scandal" and throw it to the rightist k00k crowd like so much fresh, raw meat. Still, you've got to love Drudge, if only because he carries on in the finest shrieking tabloid tradition -- never let the facts get in the way of a good story -- along with providing us all with some good cheap laffs.

On the face of it, it's a video of a white man harassing a group of black kids out of a rally many feel had racist leanings. But the man says that the kids were from ACORN, a group he says is especially hostile to the agenda of the Sept. 12 "Tea Party" in Washington, DC. And he, Tim Jones, was someone who didn't want people from ACORN trying to disrupt or in this case selling flags to the assembled to raise money for their group, so he took it upon himself to make them leave. But then we add to this the fact that ACORN says they never sent anyone to the "Tea Party" rally, and in fact aren't in the business of sending people out there as vendors. This is a concern that has been raised over the past week, but Jones doesn't feel inclined to defend himself or for that matter make all that much of a presence since the video came out, and the person who shot the video is being dodgy trying to cry about our link to Max Blumenthal and telling us to "piss off". So with the credibility of both the cameraman and Jones himself in question, we have to assume with no other evidence saying otherwise, that these kids were not part of ACORN. Bitchy, greedy, stupid, paunchy White America was at its bitchiest, greediest, stupidest and paunchiest on this fine September afternoon. Never before had so many paid so much to fuel so many SUVs to be at such an historic event. The liberty to piss and moan about having a mixed-race President, to piss and moan about having to pony up for highways and bridges and libraries and schools and Medicare, to piss and moan about anything even remotely resembling national healthcare and demand the poor be allowed to sicken and die while pissing and moaning about how Obama is going to kill their grandmas, is a sacred liberty in this country, and bitchy, greedy, stupid, paunchy White America was there to exercise it.

There were people here who think Obama is a Nazi. There were people here who think he's a Socialist. There were people here who think he's some kind of "Manchurian Candidate". There were people here who were still demanding proof of Obama's citizenship even after Chris Matthews had waved a copy of the guy's birth certificate in front of everybody on TV, f'cripesake. There were people here who think the Universe is ten thousand years old.

The mind reels. One found oneself almost in awe.

The largest ever concentration of white people in DC outside of a Capitals game gathered in front of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center to cheer the arrival of ambulance loads of wounded, maimed and traumatized youth and celebrate religious war.

Outnumbered nearly 4 to 1, DC's Left contingents hit rock bottom this evening in a disheartening display of direct inaction. Speculation among The Posse points to the vigil being "demojacked" by Code Pink, with all potential turnout being sucked away to a safer, drier, non-threatening, invisible indoor event further downtown.

On the evening of August 25, 2009, thousands of Virginians attended a town hall meeting on federal health care reform in Reston, Virginia.

The event was held at South Lakes High School and featured Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA) and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean.



While the majority of attendees at the facility were explicit supporters of health care reform, numerous right-wing individuals disrupted the event.

In one instance, a right-winger punched an Obama supporter in the face without provocation. The right-winger was subsequently pushed away from the area by several individuals and Fairfax County Police later evicted him from the property.

The man was wearing a CATO Institute t-shirt. The institution is a libertarian think tank based in Washington, D.C.

In another incident, several conservative military veterans surrounded an elderly man and physically intimidated him in an attempt to censor the man who supported health care reform.



Countless conservatives held signs of President Obama that prominently featured the president's face with a mustache painted under his nose meant to resemble former German dictator Adolf Hitler.

Others held signs that portrayed President Obama as the cartoon character The Joker. The images of Obama as The Joker resembled old minstrel shows whereby actors of European descent applied facial makeup in a mocking attempt to resemble individuals of African descent.

Several conservative supporters of status quo health care flew "Don't Tread on Me" flags and attempted to silence anyone who "does not support freedom," has "socialist" tendencies or did not serve in the U.S. Military.

Before the town hall meeting began conservative pro-life activist Randall Terry mocked "baby-killing" by stabbing play dolls and pretended to assassinate a woman resembling a "grandma." Terry protested Obama's health care reform legislation and called it "baby killing and grandma killing."



Terry told a local reporter "there's no way to pay for [Obama's health care reform] without killing granny."

The prominent activist and his supporters later interrupted former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean's speech only to be chased out by local Virginians.



Several right-wing activists held signs that read "Obama Lies, Grandma Dies." When questioned about the signs several right-wing activists replied by warning of "socialism" and "death panels."

Several local media outlets described the event as turning into "near chaos" as supporters and opponents clashed inside and outside the high school.
